68 Andorra

Andorra is a tiny landlocked microstate nestled high in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, known for duty-free shopping, ski resorts, and stunning alpine scenery. Despite being just 468 square kilometers, it offers excellent skiing at Grandvalira and Vallnord in winter and hiking through wildflower meadows in summer. The capital Andorra la Vella is the highest capital city in Europe, and the country's Romanesque churches and mountain villages give it a charm far beyond its size.

No Visa Required but Schengen Needed

Andorra itself requires no visa, but since you must pass through France or Spain to reach it, you need valid entry for the Schengen area. Non-EU citizens may need a multiple-entry Schengen visa. Bring your passport or national ID card.

💡

Currency Is the Euro

Andorra uses the Euro despite not being an EU member. Both cash and card payments (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops. ATMs are readily available throughout Andorra la Vella.

💡

Duty-Free Shopping Paradise

Andorra is a duty-free zone with significantly lower prices on electronics, perfumes, tobacco, and spirits. However, check French and Spanish customs limits before returning to the EU. Both countries maintain border controls and enforce import quantity limits.

💡

Catalan Is the Official Language

The official language is Catalan, but Spanish and French are widely spoken due to proximity to both countries. English is understood in tourist areas, hotels, and ski resorts. Basic Catalan greetings are appreciated.

💡

No Public Alcohol Consumption

It is illegal to consume alcohol in public places in Andorra with a penalty of EUR 300. Drinking is only permitted in licensed establishments like bars, restaurants, and hotels.

💡

Skiing and Outdoor Activities

Andorra has excellent ski resorts including Grandvalira and Vallnord. Ski season runs from December to April. In summer, hiking and mountain biking in the Pyrenees are popular. The Caldea thermal spa complex is the largest in southern Europe.

Security Overview

Security Ranking

93/100

Very strong

Andorra currently sits in the lowest caution tier across the main government travel advisories we track.

Refreshed 04 Apr 2026

Risk Level
Low Caution
General Notes
Andorra is one of the safest countries in Europe with virtually no violent crime. The main risks are weather-related — avalanches in winter, rockfalls, and sudden mountain weather changes. Road conditions can be challenging in winter with snow and ice on mountain passes. Andorra has no airport or train station, so access is only by road.
Common Scams
Very few scams target tourists. Occasional overpricing in ski resort areas and duty-free shops that may not always offer the best deals despite the tax-free label — compare prices before buying electronics or luxury goods. Parking fines in Andorra la Vella can catch visitors off guard.
Advice
Carry snow chains in winter and check road conditions before driving mountain passes. Stay on marked trails when hiking — mountain rescue is available but can be costly. Bring warm layers even in summer as temperatures drop significantly at altitude. Ensure your travel insurance covers skiing and mountain activities if planning outdoor adventures.
