80 Honduras

Honduras is in Central America, bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is best known among travelers for the Copan ruins, Bay Islands diving, and rainforest landscapes. Travel familiarity is moderate, with strong appeal for budget and adventure travelers rather than first-time mainstream tourism. Planning is easier in established routes, while remote areas usually need more careful logistics and transport planning.

💡

Check Current Advisory Level

U.S. State Department currently lists Honduras at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) due to crime. Review area-specific notes before travel.

💡

Follow Entry Rules Strictly

Carry a passport with 6+ months validity and evidence of onward travel. Overstays can trigger significant exit fines.

💡

Use Bay Islands Caution Context

Official advisory notes resort areas in Bay Islands are generally better policed than some mainland high-risk zones.

💡

Currency and Payments

The official currency is the Honduran Lempira (HNL). US dollars are accepted in tourist areas and the Bay Islands, but smaller towns prefer lempiras. ATMs are available in urban areas but can be rare in rural regions, and not all accept foreign cards, so carry enough cash when heading outside cities.

💡

Safety in Urban Areas

Avoid displaying cash, jewelry, or expensive electronics. Ask locals about safe areas for walking and avoid walking or driving at night, especially in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Tourist areas on the Bay Islands and Copan are generally safer than major cities.

💡

Tipping Etiquette

A tip of about 10% is standard in most restaurants. Tip porters, drivers, and tour guides a small amount in lempiras. On the Bay Islands, where US dollars are common, tipping in dollars is also acceptable. Only drink sealed bottled water throughout the country.

💡

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from December to April offers the best weather with less rain and comfortable temperatures. Hurricane season runs from mid-May through November. The Bay Islands can be visited year-round, but visibility for diving is best from March to September.
