89 Jordan

Jordan is in the Middle East, bordered by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Israel, and the Palestinian territories, with access to the Red Sea at Aqaba. It is highly familiar for Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and compact overland routes between major highlights. Travelers often find it one of the more accessible countries in the region for short cultural and historical trips. Most itineraries are manageable within a week, making Jordan suitable for first-time regional travel with focused planning.

Notes

I was able to obtain a Jordan visa on arrival because I had a valid Schengen visa. The visa fee was 40 JOD and it was granted at the same time. Without a Schengen visa, Nepalese passport holders would need to apply at a Jordanian embassy.

💡

Jordan Pass

Buy the Jordan Pass online before arrival. It covers visa fee (40 JOD) plus entry to 40+ sites including Petra. The Wanderer pass ($70) includes 1-day Petra, Explorer ($75) includes 2-day, and Expert ($80) includes 3-day Petra access.

💡

Currency

Jordanian Dinar (JOD) is the currency. 1 JOD = ~1.41 USD. ATMs are widely available. USD is widely accepted at tourist sites and hotels. Always carry some cash for smaller shops and taxis.

💡

Transportation

JETT buses connect Amman to major destinations (Petra, Aqaba, Dead Sea). Local taxis use meters in Amman. Uber/Careem work well in Amman. For flexibility, renting a car is ideal as public transport between smaller towns is limited.

💡

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal. Summers are extremely hot, especially in Wadi Rum and Aqaba. Winters can be cold in Amman and Petra with occasional snow.

💡

Safety

Jordan is one of the safest countries in the Middle East. People are very hospitable. Petty crime is rare. Stick to well-traveled areas and follow local news for border region updates.

💡

Bargaining

Haggling is expected at souks and with taxi drivers who don't use meters. Start at about half the asking price. Fixed prices at restaurants and malls.

💡

Dress Code

Jordan is moderate but conservative dress is appreciated, especially outside Amman. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and rural areas. Swimwear is fine at the Dead Sea and Aqaba resorts.

Arrival in Jordan and First Hours in Amman

📍 Amman

I landed in Jordan around 2 am. Immigration, buying a SIM card, and exchanging money took time, so I reached my hotel around 6 in the morning. After resting for a while, I went out later in the day to see the city and get my first feel of Amman.

2

Wadi Rum Jeep Safari and Desert Camp

📍 Wadi Rum

On the second day, I traveled to Wadi Rum. I joined a jeep safari in the desert, spent the day enjoying the landscape, and stayed overnight in a desert camp.

3

Petra Visit and Overnight Stay

📍 Petra

I left Wadi Rum for Petra and spent the day visiting Petra. After exploring the site, I stayed the night in Petra city.

4

Return to Amman Airport and Fly Back

📍 Petra to Amman

On the final day, I traveled from Petra back to Amman Airport and flew back home.
