I applied for the El Salvador visa at the El Salvadoran Embassy in the Dominican Republic. I first submitted documents by email, which took about 10-15 days of back-and-forth before they confirmed everything was in order. The embassy then required an in-person visit with original copies. There was a slight delay as I initially had the wrong photo size — they required 2x2 inch photographs. The visa was approved and issued on the spot after paying 40 USD in cash. The embassy staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout the process.

Bitcoin was adopted as legal tender in 2021 but its mandatory acceptance was removed in late 2024. Some businesses, especially in tourist areas like El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach), still accept it via apps, but US dollars remain the practical everyday currency for travelers.
El Salvador recorded historic lows in homicides in 2023-2024 following a major government crackdown on gang activity. The US State Department advises exercising normal precautions. Petty theft and 'gringo pricing' at markets are the most common issues for tourists. Avoid walking alone at night outside well-lit areas.
Public 'chicken buses' are very cheap but crowded. Uber operates in San Salvador. For intercity travel, minivans and shuttle services connect tourist routes like El Tunco, Ruta de las Flores, and Suchitoto. Driving is safe during the day but avoid driving after dark due to poorly lit roads and unexpected obstacles.
The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit, with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. The rainy season (May-October) brings afternoon downpours but mornings are usually clear. Surf season on the Pacific coast peaks from March to October with consistent swells.
