💡

E-Visa Required for Most Visitors

Most nationalities need an e-visa to enter Azerbaijan, which can be applied for at evisa.gov.az. Apply at least 5 days before travel. The e-visa is single entry, valid for 30 days, and costs about USD 26. If staying more than 15 days, you must register with the police, though hotels usually handle this for you.

💡

Entry is by Air Only

As of 2025, Azerbaijan's land borders remain sealed and the only way to enter or exit the country is by air through Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Plan your itinerary accordingly if you are traveling through the Caucasus region.

💡

Currency and Payments

The currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). Card payments are accepted at most shops and restaurants in Baku, but cash is preferred outside the capital. Use ATMs from ABB, Kapital, or ATB banks for zero foreign card withdrawal fees. You must declare foreign currency upon arrival.

💡

Getting Around Baku

Baku has a clean and efficient metro running from 6am to midnight with trains every 2-3 minutes. A BakuCard costs 2 AZN and can be loaded with credit for metro and bus rides at 0.30 AZN per trip. Bolt is the most commonly used taxi app. Airport buses run around the clock to the city center for 1.30 AZN.

💡

Carry Your Passport at All Times

Police can request to see your passport and visa at any time and may fine or detain you without valid documents. Always carry your original passport and a printed copy of your e-visa. Keep digital copies on your phone as an additional backup.

💡

Food and Water Safety

Drink only bottled or boiled water, and avoid raw or undercooked food and unpasteurized dairy products. Azerbaijani cuisine is delicious and affordable, with plov, kebabs, and dolma being staples. Tea culture is central to daily life and is served with jam or sugar cubes held between the teeth.

💡

Best Time to Visit

Mid-spring (April to May) and mid-autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather with moderate temperatures. Summers in Baku can be very hot and windy, while winters are mild but grey. Azerbaijan is one of the most cost-effective destinations in the region, with Baku costing notably less than European capitals.
