48 Bahrain

Bahrain combines Gulf modernity with archaeological depth, from Manama's skyline and souqs to Bahrain Fort, Muharraq heritage districts, and desert landmarks like the Tree of Life. It is compact, easy to navigate, and suitable for short city breaks with strong food and cultural variety. Travelers should remain aware of regional developments and local norms while enjoying generally convenient infrastructure.

💡

Visa and Entry

A visa is required for most travelers, valid for tourist stays of up to two weeks. Visas can be obtained on arrival at the airport or applied for in advance online at evisa.gov.bh. The cost is approximately BHD 10 (about USD 26).

💡

Currency and Payments

The Bahraini Dinar (BHD) is one of the world's highest-valued currencies, with 1 BHD equal to approximately USD 2.65. Cards are accepted in malls, hotels, and modern restaurants. Carry cash for souks, small shops, and taxis.

💡

Getting Around

An efficient bus system connects major cities and islands, costing about BHD 0.3 per ride. Renting a car is strongly recommended for maximum flexibility, and fuel prices are very low. Taxis are available but negotiate fares or ensure the meter is used.

💡

Dress Code

Bahrain is one of the most liberal Gulf countries, but modest dress is expected in mosques, souks, and traditional neighborhoods. Women should cover shoulders and wear long pants or skirts when visiting mosques. Swimwear is fine at hotel pools and private beaches.

💡

Tipping Culture

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. Leave 10-15% at restaurants if no service charge is included. BHD 1-2 is appropriate for taxi drivers and hotel staff. Some restaurants add a 10% service charge automatically.

💡

Best Time to Visit

November to March is the most comfortable time to visit with temperatures around 20-25C. Summer (June-September) is extremely hot and humid, often exceeding 40C. The Bahrain Grand Prix (Formula 1) takes place in March and draws large crowds.

💡

Electricity and Plugs

Bahrain uses Type G plugs (British three-pin) with 230V/50Hz. Travelers from the US or continental Europe will need an adapter. Most hotels can provide adapters upon request.

Manama: Fort, Mosque & Souq

📍 Manama

Visit Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 4,000 years of archaeological layers from the ancient Dilmun civilization. Tour the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, one of the largest in the world with its fiberglass dome and Italian marble interiors, which welcomes non-Muslim visitors. Explore the Manama Souq in the evening for gold jewelry, spices, and traditional textiles, then sample machboos (spiced rice with meat) at a local restaurant.

2

Muharraq, Tree of Life & Pearl Trail

📍 Muharraq / Southern Bahrain

Cross the Sheikh Isa bin Salman Causeway to Muharraq Island and walk the Pearling Path, a UNESCO-listed trail of historic pearling houses and merchant residences from Bahrain's pre-oil pearl diving era. Visit the Beit Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, a beautifully restored traditional house with wind towers and carved gypsum walls. Drive south through the desert to the Tree of Life, a 400-year-old mesquite tree thriving alone in the barren landscape, and try balaleet (sweet vermicelli with egg) and halwa showaiter at a traditional cafe.

3

National Museum and Old Manama

📍 Manama

Visit Bahrain National Museum to understand Dilmun, pearl-trading, and modern Gulf history. Continue through old Manama streets near Bab Al Bahrain for markets and local tea houses.

4

Amwaj Islands and Coastline

📍 Amwaj and Muharraq

Security Overview

Security Ranking

39/100

High risk

Bahrain currently lands in a high-caution range across the main government travel advisories we track. Source levels are not fully aligned, so the rank is smoothed toward the cautious side.

Refreshed 04 Apr 2026

Risk Level
Severe Caution
General Notes
Daily travel in main areas is usually straightforward, but regional tensions can create occasional security advisories or transport disruptions. Local laws and public conduct expectations are stricter than many Western destinations.
Common Scams
Typical issues include taxi fare inflation without meters, nightlife overbilling in select venues, and unofficial tour offers that do not match promised inclusions.
Advice
Use licensed transport, monitor local guidance during your stay, and keep plans flexible for sudden operational changes. Dress modestly in conservative settings and carry digital plus physical copies of key documents.
