I applied for the Vanuatu visa from Canberra by email through the Vanuatu High Commission. The entire process was done online via email and the visa fee was paid by bank transfer, so no embassy visit was required.

Citizens of over 100 countries can enter Vanuatu visa-free or with visa on arrival for up to 30 days. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months and proof of onward travel. Extensions up to 120 days can be arranged at the Immigration Office in Port Vila.
The Vanuatu Vatu (VUV) is the only accepted currency. One USD is approximately 120 vatu. Cards (Visa and Mastercard) work in Port Vila and Luganville, but buses, taxis, water taxis, and markets are cash-only. ATMs are available in main towns.
Vanuatu is famous for producing some of the best kava in the Pacific. Nakamals (kava bars) are found throughout the islands. The drink has a mildly sedative effect and earthy taste. Start with a small shell to gauge your tolerance.
Domestic flights and ferries connect the islands. Air Vanuatu operates small planes between main islands. Local buses in Port Vila cost about 150 vatu per ride but do not run on fixed schedules or routes. Taxis cost roughly 100 vatu per kilometer; agree on price beforehand.
Mount Yasur on Tanna Island is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes. Check the volcanic alert level before visiting. Follow your guide's instructions, stay behind safety barriers, and wear closed-toe shoes. The best viewing is at dusk when eruptions light up the sky.
The dry season from April to October offers the most comfortable weather, ideal for outdoor activities. November to March is the wet and cyclone season with higher humidity and rainfall. Sea temperatures are warm year-round.

📍 Port Vila
Explore the capital Port Vila starting with the vibrant Port Vila Market where local women sell tropical produce, kava, and handicrafts. Visit Iririki Island Resort by ferry for stunning harbour views and the Cascade Waterfalls just outside town. Enjoy a sunset dinner overlooking the harbour at one of Port Vila's waterfront restaurants.
📍 Tanna Island
Fly to Tanna Island and travel to Mount Yasur, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes. Stand on the crater rim at dusk and watch explosive eruptions hurling molten lava into the night sky just meters away. Visit the nearby Tanna Coffee Factory and meet local villagers who maintain centuries-old kastom traditions.
📍 Efate Island
Return to Efate and drive to the stunning Blue Lagoon at Eton, where a freshwater spring meets the ocean creating vivid turquoise swimming holes. Snorkel at Hideaway Island Marine Sanctuary where you can even post a letter at the world's only underwater post office. Swing from rope swings into the crystal-clear water surrounded by tropical forest.

One of the world's most accessible active volcanoes — drive right up to the crater rim on Tanna Island and peer down into a pit of bubbling lava, explosive eruptions, and glowing magma just hundreds of meters below. The volcano erupts every few minutes, launching lava bombs into the air with a thunderous roar. Visiting at dusk is the most dramatic experience, watching red lava glow against the darkening sky.

Swing from a rope into the lagoon, snorkel with colorful fish, or simply float in the warm water. Several blue lagoons dot the island, but the most popular near Port Vila offers facilities while retaining its natural beauty.
