55 Fiji

55 Fiji

Fiji is a South Pacific archipelago of over 330 islands known for pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise lagoons, and some of the friendliest people on Earth. The Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains offer postcard-perfect beach escapes, while the Coral Coast and interior rivers provide adventure. Fijian culture is deeply welcoming — a kava ceremony with village elders is a highlight of any visit. The warm 'Bula!' greeting sets the tone from the moment you arrive.

💡

Visa-Free Entry

Most tourists can enter Fiji without a pre-arranged visa. You need a valid passport, return ticket, and confirmed accommodation address. A 4-month visitor permit is granted on arrival for citizens of over 100 countries.

💡

Kava Ceremony Etiquette

When visiting a Fijian village, bring a bundle of dried kava root (yaqona) as a sevusevu (customary gift) for the chief. During the ceremony, clap once before receiving the bowl, drink it in one go, then clap three times. It has a mildly sedative effect.

💡

Village Dress Code and Customs

Cover your shoulders and knees in villages. Remove hats and sunglasses as only the chief may wear them. Do not touch anyone's head as it is considered sacred. Avoid visiting villages on Sundays as it is family and church day.

💡

Currency and Tipping

The currency is the Fijian Dollar (FJD). Credit cards are accepted in resorts and main towns, but carry cash for markets, villages, and remote islands. Tipping is not expected or traditionally part of Fijian culture, but is appreciated for exceptional service.

💡

Currency Declaration Required

Declare currency equivalent to more than FJD $5,000 when entering Fiji and FJD $10,000 when exiting. Undeclared amounts can result in fines or imprisonment. This applies to all forms of currency, not just cash.

💡

Island Transport

Fast catamarans and small planes connect the main islands. Book inter-island ferries and domestic flights in advance during peak season (July-September). Local buses on Viti Levu are cheap and run frequently. Taxis are available but agree on fares before departure.

💡

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to October offers the best weather with lower humidity and minimal rainfall. The wet season from November to April brings tropical storms and cyclone risk. Water temperature is warm year-round, making snorkeling and diving enjoyable any time.
