Visa-Free for Many Nationalities

Greece is a Schengen country. Citizens from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and many other countries can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date.

💡

Currency and Cash Tips

Greece uses the Euro. ATMs are plentiful on the mainland and larger islands, but smaller islands may have limited ATM access or they may run out of cash during peak season. Use ATMs from Greek banks like Alpha Bank, Piraeus, or National Bank of Greece for better rates. Many small tavernas and ferry ticket offices on islands prefer cash.

💡

Island-Hopping Transport

Ferries are the main way to travel between Greek islands. Book ferries on ferryhopper.com or directferries.com. Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways are the main operators. Book popular routes (e.g., Athens to Santorini) at least a week in advance during summer. In Athens, the all-day transport card costs EUR 4.10 for unlimited metro, bus, and tram rides.

💡

Best Time to Visit

May to June and September to October offer the best balance of pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. July and August are peak season with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, packed islands, and highest accommodation prices. Many island businesses close from November to April.

💡

Tipping and Dining Customs

Tipping 5-10% is customary at sit-down restaurants, usually left as cash on the table. Dinner is typically eaten late, around 9-10pm. Greeks share dishes family-style at the center of the table. When a waiter brings the bill, it is normal to linger; you will never be rushed.

💡

Electricity and Plugs

Greece uses Type F plugs with 230V/50Hz electricity. Travelers from the US, UK, or Australia need a European-style plug adapter. Pack a small power strip for charging multiple devices, especially in older hotels with limited outlets.

💡

Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun

Greek summers are intensely hot and sunny. Carry a reusable water bottle as tap water is safe to drink on the mainland and most larger islands (but not always on smaller islands like Santorini). Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Most shops and restaurants close for an afternoon siesta from roughly 2pm to 5pm during summer.
