💡

Currency and Payments

Montenegro uses the Euro (EUR) despite not being an EU member. Cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants in tourist areas, but carry at least EUR 20-30 in cash for small shops, buses, and rural areas.

💡

Getting Around

Buses are the main public transport connecting coastal towns and inland areas. The Kotor to Budva route is about 30 minutes by bus. Taxis are available but agree on the price beforehand. Renting a car is ideal for exploring the Bay of Kotor and Durmitor National Park.

💡

Tipping Culture

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. Leave 10-15% in restaurants for good service. For taxi drivers, rounding up the fare is standard. Tips are usually given in euros, either in cash or added to a card payment.

💡

Safety

Montenegro is a safe destination with low crime rates. Petty crime like pickpocketing can occur during tourist season (May-September), especially on public transport and in crowded areas. Drive carefully on mountain roads which can be narrow and winding.

💡

Electricity and Plugs

Montenegro uses Type C and F plugs with 230V/50Hz. Travelers from the US, UK, or Asia will need an adapter. Most modern chargers are dual-voltage and only need a plug adapter.

💡

Best Time to Visit

The coast is best from May to September with warm Mediterranean weather. July-August is peak season with higher prices. For Durmitor National Park, summer (June-September) is ideal for hiking. The Bay of Kotor is beautiful year-round but can get very crowded when cruise ships dock.
