Come as a day trip from Nice
Monaco is small enough to see properly in a day and far cheaper to sleep in Nice. The train from Nice-Ville to Monaco-Monte-Carlo takes about 25 minutes and runs frequently along the coast.

Below is a summary of how I entered, whether through a visa or another permitted route.
Prepare these before applying
Monaco does not issue its own tourist visa and there is no border control between France and Monaco — you simply walk or drive across. What matters in practice is being lawfully in France first. I entered overland from Nice on the same day, so the entry that counted was my Schengen entry into France, not Monaco itself. Nepali passport holders therefore need valid Schengen documentation to reach Monaco at all.

Monaco-Ville sits high on the rock and is best done in the cooler morning. Working downhill to the harbour and then across to Place du Casino saves the steepest climbing and puts you in Monte Carlo when the square is busiest.
Monaco is built on a near-vertical hillside and has a network of free public lifts and escalators connecting the levels. They save a great deal of climbing between the harbour, the Rock and Monte Carlo.
Because there is no border post, you get no Monaco stamp. If you collect entry stamps, this is one country where there is nothing to collect.
The Casino de Monte-Carlo enforces a dress code and a minimum age in the gaming rooms, and charges admission. The atrium and the square outside are free to walk through.
The entire country is about two square kilometres. You do not need transport once you are inside Monaco — comfortable shoes matter more, because almost every route involves steps or a gradient.

📍 Monaco-Ville, La Condamine and Monte Carlo
Arrived overland from Nice and went straight up to Monaco-Ville on the Rock. Walked the ramparts for the views over Port Hercule on one side and Fontvieille on the other, watched the changing of the guard at the Prince's Palace, visited Saint Nicholas Cathedral, and cut through the Saint-Martin Gardens along the cliff. Came down through the streets below the Rock and crossed to Monte Carlo for the Casino and Place du Casino before heading back to France the same afternoon.

Very strong
Monaco is consistently rated among the safest countries in the world, with an exceptionally high density of police and public CCTV coverage. Petty theft in the busiest tourist areas is the main practical concern.

The fortified old town on a rocky headland above the sea, holding the Prince's Palace, the cathedral and the oldest streets in the country. Its ramparts give the best views over both harbours.
Official residence of the Grimaldi family since the 13th century. The changing of the guard by the Carabiniers du Prince takes place on the square outside and draws a crowd well before it starts.
Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral built in white stone, with a gold mosaic apse. The tombs of the Grimaldi princes are here, including that of Princess Grace.
The Belle Epoque casino designed by Charles Garnier, architect of the Paris Opera. The square outside is free to walk through and is where Monaco's supercar traffic gathers.
Monaco's main harbour and the deep-water berth for the superyachts the country is known for. It also forms part of the Formula 1 street circuit.
Public gardens running along the cliff edge of Monaco-Ville, planted with pines and Mediterranean species and dotted with sculpture, with views straight down to the sea.
A district built on land reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s, with its own marina, apartment blocks and parkland. Best seen from the ramparts above.
