46 Vatican City

Vatican City is the world's smallest sovereign state but one of the most significant religious and artistic destinations, centered on St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. It is usually visited together with Rome and rewards careful timing due to heavy visitor flows. Dress rules, ticket planning, and crowd strategy are key for a smooth experience.

💡

Book Tickets Online in Advance

Vatican Museums no longer sell tickets at the door. You must book online at museivaticani.va. Tickets open 60 days in advance and often sell out 3-4 weeks before visit dates. Summer and holiday dates sell out fastest. A standard adult ticket costs EUR 17.

💡

Strict Dress Code

Modest clothing is strictly enforced at both the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Sleeveless tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts, and hats are not permitted. Visitors are turned away at security for non-compliance. Carry a scarf or shawl to cover up.

💡

Beat the Crowds

Arrive early or visit in the mid-afternoon when morning tour groups have finished. Wednesday mornings have larger crowds due to the Papal Audience. The last Sunday of the month used to offer free entry but check current policies as this has changed. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends.

💡

Sistine Chapel Rules

Photography is strictly forbidden inside the Sistine Chapel (though it is allowed in most other parts of the Vatican Museums). Visitors must remain silent. Guards enforce both rules actively. Take your time to appreciate Michelangelo's ceiling and The Last Judgment.

💡

St. Peter's Basilica is Free

Entry to St. Peter's Basilica is free and separate from the Vatican Museums ticket. The dome climb costs EUR 8-10 (elevator partway then 320 steps, or 551 steps entirely on foot). The Basilica opens at 7 AM, earlier than the museums, making early morning a good time to visit.

💡

What Not to Bring

Large bags, food, drinks, umbrellas, and selfie sticks are prohibited inside the Vatican Museums. Only small bags are allowed. There are cloakroom facilities for storing items. Metal detectors and bag checks are in place at all entrances.

💡

Plan Rome and Vatican Together

Vatican City can be visited in half to one full day, so pair it with nearby Rome landmarks to use your time efficiently. Keep walking shoes and a refillable bottle, especially in warmer months.

🛡️

Security Overview

Risk Level
Low Caution (Crowd Management Focus)
General Notes
The area is heavily policed and generally safe, but dense crowds create pickpocket risk around queue lines, metro links, and major squares. Heat and long standing times are common practical challenges in peak season.
Common Scams
Frequent issues include unofficial "skip-the-line" ticket sellers, fake tour representatives near entry points, and overpriced transfer offers around major terminals.
Advice
Book official tickets in advance, carry minimal valuables in anti-theft bags, and avoid buying tours from street sellers near entrances. Follow dress code rules to prevent entry denial.
