Singapore is a tiny but mighty city-state in Southeast Asia, where futuristic architecture meets lush tropical gardens and one of the world's greatest food scenes. From the iconic Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay to the vibrant hawker centers of Chinatown and Little India, the island packs an incredible density of culture, cuisine, and attractions into just 730 square kilometers. Impeccably clean, efficient, and safe, it's one of the easiest countries in Asia to navigate.

💡

Getting Around

Singapore's MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system is efficient, affordable, and covers most tourist areas. Buy an EZ-Link or Singapore Tourist Pass for unlimited rides. Buses complement the MRT well. Grab (ride-hailing app) is widely available. Taxis are metered and reliable.

💡

Strict Laws

Singapore enforces strict laws. Chewing gum is banned for import and sale. Littering, jaywalking, and smoking in non-designated areas carry heavy fines (SGD 300-1000). Drug offences carry severe penalties including the death penalty. Vaping and e-cigarettes are illegal.

💡

Hawker Centres for Budget Food

Hawker centres are the best way to eat well on a budget in Singapore. UNESCO-recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage, these large food courts serve incredible local dishes for SGD 3-6 per meal. Top picks include Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, Newton Food Centre, and Tekka Centre in Little India.

💡

Best Time to Visit

Singapore is hot and humid year-round with temperatures of 25-32 degrees Celsius. Rain can come at any time but usually as short afternoon downpours. December to January sees the most rain. There is no real 'bad' season to visit. Carry an umbrella and stay hydrated.

💡

Currency & Costs

The Singapore Dollar (SGD) is the currency. Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in Asia. Budget travelers can manage on SGD 60-100/day by staying in hostels and eating at hawker centres. ATMs are everywhere. Credit cards are widely accepted. Tipping is not customary.

💡

Water & Connectivity

Tap water in Singapore is safe to drink directly. Free WiFi is available at most public areas, shopping malls, and hawker centres via Wireless@SG. Local SIM cards from Singtel, StarHub, or M1 are available at Changi Airport and convenience stores from SGD 12-15.

💡

Free Attractions

Many top attractions are free, including Gardens by the Bay outdoor areas, the Supertree Grove light show (7:45pm and 8:45pm nightly), Merlion Park, Esplanade, Fort Canning Park, Marina Barrage, and the Spectra water and light show at Marina Bay Sands (8pm and 9pm nightly).

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Singapore's national dish. Tender poached or roasted chicken served with fragrant rice cooked in chicken stock, accompanied by chilli sauce, ginger paste, and dark soy sauce. The rice is oily, flavourful, and the star of the dish alongside the silky chicken.

Chilli Crab

Whole mud crab stir-fried in a rich, tangy-sweet sauce made from sambal chilli paste, tomato, garlic, and egg. Messy to eat but absolutely worth it. Best enjoyed with fried mantou buns to soak up the sauce.

Laksa

A rich and aromatic noodle soup featuring rice vermicelli in a spicy coconut milk broth infused with lemongrass, galangal, and dried shrimp paste. Topped with prawns, fish cakes, cockles, bean sprouts, and a generous spoonful of sambal.

Satay

Skewered and charcoal-grilled marinated meat (chicken, beef, or mutton) served with a thick, sweet peanut dipping sauce alongside rice cakes (ketupat), sliced onions, and cucumber. Best enjoyed at Lau Pa Sat or East Coast Lagoon hawker centres.

Kaya Toast

A beloved Singaporean breakfast of crispy toasted bread slathered with kaya (a fragrant coconut and pandan egg jam) and a slab of cold butter. Traditionally paired with soft-boiled eggs seasoned with soy sauce and white pepper, and a cup of strong local kopi.

Char Kway Teow

Smoky stir-fried flat rice noodles cooked over extremely high heat (wok hei) with dark soy sauce, eggs, bean sprouts, cockles, Chinese sausage (lap cheong), chives, and sometimes prawns. The charred, smoky flavour is the hallmark of a great plate.
