General Tips

The train ride from Kandy to Ella is a must-do - seven hours through tea plantations and villages. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage ancient royal palace. Visit temples in Anuradhapura and Dambulla for cultural immersion. Weligama is excellent for surfing. Yala National Park safaris are quiet, respectful, and intimate - spot leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and peacocks. The southern coast (Mirissa, Unawatuna) is ideal for beach relaxation. Try rice and curry spreads, kottu roti, hoppers with coconut sambol, and milk tea.

💡

Visa and Entry

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is required for stays up to 30 days. Apply online before traveling as airport facilities for on-arrival ETAs are limited. The ETA costs around USD 50 for most nationalities.

💡

Currency and Payments

The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the official currency. Sri Lanka is cash-centric for travelers. Exchange money upon arrival for the best rates as LKR is a closed currency with poor rates abroad. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas. Foreign tourist sites charge significantly higher prices than locals.

💡

Getting Around

Use ride-share apps like PickMe and Uber to avoid tuk-tuk driver overcharging. The train network is excellent and scenic, especially the Kandy-Ella route. Book train tickets in advance for 2nd class observation seats. Avoid public buses due to reported harassment and overcrowding.

💡

Tipping Culture

A 10% service charge is added to most restaurant and hotel bills. Additional tipping of 10% is appreciated for good service. Tip safari guides, drivers, and hotel staff small amounts. Sri Lankan Rupees are preferred for tips.

💡

Electricity and Plugs

Sri Lanka uses Type D and G plugs (the British three-pin system) with 230V/50Hz. Bring a universal adapter. Power outages can occur, especially in rural areas, so carry a portable power bank.

💡

Best Time to Visit

The best time depends on the coast. The southwest coast and hill country are best from December to March. The east coast is best from April to September. The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy, Anuradhapura) is best from January to April.
