💡

Digital-First Society

Estonia is one of the most digitally advanced countries in the world. Contactless card payments, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are accepted almost everywhere including small shops, restaurants, and public transport. Free Wi-Fi is widely available in cities, cafes, and public spaces. The country even offers e-Residency for digital entrepreneurs.

💡

Currency and Money

Estonia uses the Euro. ATMs are widely available in Tallinn, Tartu, and other cities. Avoid exchanging money at airports or hotels, as banks and authorized exchange bureaus in the city offer much better rates. While cards are accepted almost everywhere, carry a small amount of cash for rural areas and small market vendors.

💡

Transport

Tallinn's public transport (buses, trolleybuses, trams) is well-organized and runs on schedule. A single ticket costs 2 Euro, with discounts for children and seniors. Tallinn's Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. Buses and trains connect Tallinn to Tartu (2.5 hours, EUR 11-20) and Parnu (2 hours). The Tallinn-Helsinki ferry takes about 2 hours.

💡

Language

Estonian is the official language, but English is widely spoken in Tallinn and tourist areas. Russian is also commonly spoken, especially by the older generation and in northeastern Estonia. Finnish and German are understood by some. In most tourist-oriented establishments, you can easily get by with English.

💡

Best Time to Visit

June to August offers the best weather with long days (up to 19 hours of daylight) and temperatures around 18-22 degrees C. The Midsummer festival (Jaanipaev) on June 23-24 is a major celebration with bonfires. December brings charming Christmas markets in Tallinn's Old Town. Winter (November to March) is cold and dark but atmospheric.

💡

Tipping and Local Customs

Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving 10% for good service is a nice gesture. Estonians value personal space and tend to be reserved initially but warm up quickly. Remove your shoes when entering someone's home. Tap water is safe to drink throughout the country.
