Currency and Payments

Latvia uses the Euro. Cards are widely accepted in Riga, but carry some cash for rural markets, small cafes, and street vendors. ATMs are widely available; for security, use ATMs located inside hotels, banks, or shopping malls. Riga is more expensive than the rest of the country, but overall Latvia is one of the more affordable Eurozone destinations.

💡

Getting Around Riga

Riga's Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. Rigas Satiksme operates bus, trolleybus, and tram networks covering the entire city. A single journey costs EUR 1.50 with an e-ticket. The commuter train from Riga to Jurmala beach resort takes just 30 minutes. Bolt is the most popular ride-hailing app for taxis.

💡

Language

Latvian is the official language, and Russian is widely spoken as a second language, especially by the older generation. English is commonly understood in Riga's tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. Learning a few Latvian phrases like 'Paldies' (thank you) and 'Labdien' (good day) is appreciated by locals.

💡

Best Time to Visit

Late spring and summer (May to August) offer the best weather with temperatures around 18-25 degrees C and long daylight hours. The Midsummer festival (Jani) on June 23-24 is Latvia's biggest celebration with bonfires, singing, and flower wreaths. Jurmala beach is best visited June to August. December brings charming Christmas markets in Riga's Old Town.

💡

Tap Water and Food

Tap water in Latvia is safe to drink, saving you from buying bottled water. A typical restaurant meal costs around EUR 10-15 in Riga. Visit the Riga Central Market, housed in former Zeppelin hangars, for affordable smoked fish, rye bread, and local cheese. Try the traditional Latvian dark rye bread, which is a staple of the local diet.

💡

Art Nouveau Architecture

Riga has the highest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in the world, with over 800 buildings in this style. The best examples are on Alberta Street and Elizabetes Street, designed by architect Mikhail Eisenstein. The Art Nouveau Museum at Alberta iela 12 is housed in a beautifully preserved apartment. Walking this district is free and unmissable.
