Visa Requirements

Most foreign nationals need a visa to visit Russia. The e-visa is available for many nationalities, valid for 16 days, costs around $55, and takes about 4 days to process. For longer stays, apply for a tourist visa at a Russian embassy, which requires an invitation letter from a Russian travel agency or hotel, a completed application form, passport photos, and proof of travel arrangements.

💡

Cash Is King

Since 2022, Visa and Mastercard issued outside Russia no longer work within the country due to international sanctions. Bring sufficient cash in US dollars or other major currencies (avoid Euros if entering from an EU country, as carrying Euro cash across EU borders into Russia is banned). You can bring up to $10,000 without declaring it. Exchange cash at banks or official exchange offices (obmen valyut) for Russian Rubles (RUB).

💡

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is world-famous for its ornate Soviet-era stations decorated with mosaics, chandeliers, and sculptures. It is also one of the most efficient and affordable transit systems in the world. Get a Troika card (reloadable transport card) at any metro station kiosk for easy travel. Key stations to admire include Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. Trains run from 5:30 AM to 1 AM.

💡

Language Barrier

English is not widely spoken in Russia, even in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Most signs, menus, and metro maps are in Cyrillic script. Download an offline Russian dictionary and learn to read basic Cyrillic letters, which will help you decode street signs and metro stations. Learning key phrases like 'Spasibo' (thank you), 'Zdravstvuyte' (hello), and 'Skolko stoit?' (how much?) is very helpful.

💡

SIM Card Challenges

As of 2025, foreigners purchasing a Russian SIM card must register with the Unified Biometric System (UBS) at a Sberbank branch, providing facial photos and voice recordings. This process is complex for short-term visitors. Consider using an international eSIM service or your home carrier's roaming package instead. Free Wi-Fi is available in Moscow Metro stations and many cafes.

💡

Safety and Travel Advisories

Many Western governments currently advise against travel to Russia due to geopolitical tensions. If you do travel, stick to major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, register with your embassy, and keep copies of all documents. Use only official taxis or ride-hailing apps (Yandex Go is the main one). Avoid unmarked taxis. The Moscow and St. Petersburg metro systems have security personnel at every station.
